Flexible data management is the process of creating and maintaining information structures that are responsive to the business needs. This allows companies to better adapt and respond to changes in the business environment, enhance information accessibility and support decision making with the most current and accurate data.
The necessity for flexibility is becoming more important as companies struggle to keep up with the ever-changing business landscape. The old saying that the only constant is change holds true in modern organizations and if a business’s data infrastructure isn’t able to keep pace with the ever-changing needs and strategic goals the infrastructure will soon become obsolete.
Flexibility is crucial for businesses to be able to make use of their information assets efficiently to gain a competitive advantage. This can be achieved by implementing innovative methods of monitoring the health and integrity of data pipelines as well as individual data pieces (known collectively as “data observability”) which help identify and fix issues prior to them affecting the data’s quality or security. This method provides a more proactive, automated method of managing data which decreases the need for human intervention and accelerates problem-resolution.
Flexible data management also makes it easier for teams to share information and access it. Marketing might track and address risk in a different manner than IT. However both approaches can be combined into one report that is easy to read and communicated to the leadership of the organization. This is possible thanks to tools such as data federation and business glossaries, which are driven by metadata.
